Getting paid for your dog photography by check or cash is the most direct and usually the easiest way to go, but you can also use PayPal, which is becoming more and more popular. The thing to remember with PayPal is that the company takes a percentage off the top for its service, so whether you tack that amount onto your fee or eat the cost is up to you.
If your client wants to pay with a credit card, you can run it through PayPal or you can use a merchant service account provider such as Intuit.
Also, you should decide whether you want to require a deposit when someone books a session. You can make up a general policy for all clients or decide on a case-by-case basis — it’s totally up to you. The advantage to requiring a deposit is that it helps weed out irresponsible or noncommittal clients.
Holding a slot for someone only to have the person cancel at the last minute is disappointing and financially problematic. When clients pay a deposit, they’re much more likely to keep their appointment, and if they don’t, you at least aren’t out 100 percent of the money you were counting on.
The flip side is that sometimes deposits are a deterrent for clients, and sometimes you don’t even have enough time to collect a deposit if the appointment comes in at the last minute.
