You can add flair to a basic mixed green or fresh vegetable salad in many ways. A steady diet of salads sounds health-conscious, but can become boring. Make your salads tasty (and attractive) with any number of salad-toppers.
Chunks of fresh fruit, such as orange, pear, or apple
Slivered almonds or walnut pieces
Sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds
Chopped dried fruits, such as dried apples, pears, raisins, cherries, or figs
Canned beans such as cannelloni beans (white kidney beans), garbanzo beans, and kidney beans, rinsed to remove the unsightly outer hulls
Shredded red cabbage
Grated carrot
Another trick to give a salad a special look is to run the tines of a fork lengthwise down the sides of a cucumber, scraping it, before slicing it into the salad. Also, use the tip of a spoon to scrape away the seeds in tomato wedges before adding them to a salad. Doing so keeps globs of seeds from separating out and helps give the salad a neater appearance.
