Ten Easy Kitchen Upgrades

If you don’t have the money for a complete kitchen remodel, don’t despair. There are still some things you can do to upgrade the look of your kitchen. No matter how small your budget is, there’s bound to be an idea that you can use to give your kitchen a new look and feel:

  • Brighten up the room with a fresh coat of paint: Unfortunately, your kitchen walls are prone to getting dull and dirty from the daily accumulation of grease and grime. A fresh coat of paint on the walls and ceiling brightens up any kitchen.

  • Work with wallpaper: Yes, wallpaper works in the kitchen, as long as you can wash it. And you don’t need to do all the walls or even an entire wall. Adding wallpaper to all or part of one wall brings color and texture to otherwise plain surfaces.

  • Use a border: If you don’t want to wallpaper, then consider adding a border strip near the ceiling or even in the middle of the wall as a visual break. These 8- or 9-inch wide wonders add color and life without being overbearing.

  • Treat your windows to a new dress: Adding a valance or even a single set of curtains over a sink window spruces up plain areas. Once again, the introduction of color and texture to one small area can change the appearance and feel of the entire kitchen.

  • Replace handles and knobs: Cabinets look okay? Then leave them be. But you can upgrade their appearance by purchasing new knobs or pulls. Replacing old black, wrought-iron style hardware with shiny brass stuff makes it look like you spent a ton of money without breaking the bank!

  • Give your faucet a facelift: Replacing your old kitchen sink faucet with one that has today’s features and color combinations is a nice and affordable upgrade. And replacing faucets is a project most people can handle on their own.

  • Lighten up: Just as a new faucet can brighten up your kitchen sink, new overhead light fixtures can help shed new light in the kitchen and make it look better, too. You can go fancy or conservative, but either way, the change will make your kitchen look different. And isn’t that what you’re after?

  • Trim time: Adding cove molding along the ceiling or where your cabinets meet the soffit really makes a plain kitchen classy. Even a small-sized style of trim will add texture and dimension to otherwise dull, lifeless spots.

  • Rack up your pots and pan: Want to gain some cabinet storage space and create an attractive wall feature? Installing a pot rack does both. The rack lets you hang pans and pots (freeing up storage space) and gives your kitchen a real close-at-hand feel with the cooking utensils right at your fingertips.

  • Throw in the towel: This may be the easiest upgrade around. Go buy some new towels and linens! They’ll not only look better —without all those frayed edges we’re all used to seeing — but new towels are also a great way to add color to your kitchen.
