Here are the main decision points and tasks for installing and setting up Lion Server. Each of these steps has its own list of “how to” steps, but this provides the big picture of what is involved in installing Lion Server from start to finish.
Collect data about the server Mac and your network.
You will need data about your hardware like MAC addresses, Ethernet ID and serial numbers. In addition, you will need information about your network including IP addresses and subnet masks for your DNS server, routers, and other network equipment.
Decide whether you want a new installation on an erased disk drive (commonly known as a clean install) or an upgrade.
Download Lion from the Mac App Store and make a copy before installing the server software.
Decide the role of server in your network.
Your choices include local user accounts or shared network accounts; working alone or with other servers.
A stand-alone server could have access to the Internet by remote secure access (VPN) only, or it could be visible to the Internet.
Run the installer and, if necessary, download the server components after installing the client.
After installation, perform basic post-installation configuration tasks, such as create a shared directory, add users, or further configure DNS.
Download the Server Admin Tools and then check DNS and Open Directory, if necessary.
