Get to Know the Sides of Your NOOK Tablet

Take a look at the sides of your NOOK Tablet by holding it so that the screen faces you. The top, bottom, right and left sides all have important little buttons for operating your NOOK Tablet. Read on to learn about all of them.

The top and the right

On the right side of your NOOK Tablet you find the + and – volume buttons. The top has a headphone socket where you can plug in earbuds.

The bottom of the NOOK

There’s not much to look at down here, except for one important entry point: a microUSB port. This connector serves two purposes:

• Through this port the USB cable that came with your tablet attaches to the AC adapter, allowing you to recharge the internal battery.

  
  



• You can use the USB cable to connect the NOOK Tablet to a computer to transfer files (a side-load in technospeak). You can drag and drop any PDF or EPUB files from other sources, as well as compatible files from word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation programs. You can also move files from the tablet to your computer.

  
  

If you’re comfortable with the basic operations of a Windows or Macintosh computer, you can attach your NOOK Tablet and allow it to be recognized as a storage device — essentially the same as an external hard drive or a flash memory key. You can also connect to a digital book manager like Adobe Digital Editions or Calibre to manage files.

The NOOK’s left side

Here you find a powerful button. In fact, it is so powerful and so important that it’s all by itself. It is, in fact, the power button.

• To turn it on: Press and hold the silver button for 3 or 4 seconds and release it to turn it on. If your tablet needs a password, enter that four-digit number.

  
  



• To turn it off: Press and hold the little rectangular button for about 3 or 4 seconds. A message asks if you really, really want to do that; tap the Power Off button to confirm.

  
  

You don’t have to turn off your NOOK Tablet when you’re through using it. It can tell that you haven’t tapped its screen for a few minutes. It will turn off its LCD screen and go to sleep. Or, press and immediately release the power button to send it to Sleep mode. When you wake the NOOK Tablet, it jumps right back to where you were.

If you start with a fully charged battery and let it go to sleep, the NOOK Tablet should sleep for several weeks. (Make sure the WiFi radio is turned off, or the battery will drain even while the tablet is sleeping.)

Why would you want to completely turn off the NOOK Tablet?

• You’re on an airplane that’s taking off or landing.

  
  



• You’re in a hospital or the like.

  
  



• You want to put your tablet on the shelf for a month while you sit down to write your own Great American (or Canadian) Novel.
