Apple Brown Betty

Whoever Betty was, she must have been a creative, thrifty cook with some day-old bread, butter, and apples on hand. Apple Brown Betty transforms simple ingredients into a really cozy, homey dessert.


Preparation time: 20 minutes


Cooking time: 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours on High


Yield: 6 servings


5 medium Granny Smith apples


1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter


3 cups fresh white bread crumbs


1 cup sugar


1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon


1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg



  1. Peel and core the apples.



  2. Cut the prepared apples into cubes.



  3. Lightly spray a 4- to 6-quart slow cooker with vegetable oil cooking spray.



  4. Melt the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat.



  5. Add the bread crumbs.



  6. Cook until lightly browned and toasted, stirring frequently.



  7. Remove immediately from the pan and place in a mixing bowl.



  8. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.



  9. Stir to combine.



  10. Sprinkle 1/3 of the buttered crumbs in the slow cooker.


    You want to cover the bottom of the slow cooker with the crumbs.



  11. Cover with 1/2 the apples.



  12. Sprinkle the apples with another 1/3 of the crumbs.



  13. Repeat Steps 11 and 12.



  14. Cover and cook on high for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours, or until the apples are tender.
