When installing a cable modem or DSL router on your home network, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will most likely provide the equipment and instructions you’ll need to quickly and easily get started surfing the Internet.
In case you lost the instructions — or your ISP forgot to pack the instructions — here’s an overview of the basic steps necessary to install your new modem or router:
Connect your cable modem to your wall cable television jack using a coaxial cable; or connect your DSL router to your wall phone jack using a telephone cable.
If you are using DSL, snap line filters (usually supplied by your DSL service provider) on any of your other phone lines to reduce interference.
Connect the Ethernet port of your cable modem or DSL router to an Ethernet port on your computer, network switch, or wireless access point (wireless router) using an Ethernet network cable.
Turn on your cable modem or DSL router and wait about two minutes.
This gives your modem enough time to boot up and establish a connection to the Internet.
Your computer will likely have a built-in dialup modem with a phone port. Do not confuse the phone port with your Ethernet port. If your Ethernet cable doesn’t fit the port, you’ve got the wrong port. (Ethernet ports are a bit larger than phone ports.) Keep looking!
