Time for mental inventory-taking when choosing a spot to photograph your dog. Think about the different rooms in your house. Take a little tour, even. That may sound silly, given that you live there and all, but taking a spin around the house to figure out what makes a nice backdrop is quite helpful.
And remember that although you need a lot of light, you don’t need a lot of background. You just need something that’s clean enough not to distract from the dog’s cute canine mug, such as a painted accent wall, colored couch fabric, or a hardwood floor. Just remember to try and complement your dog’s coat as opposed to camouflaging it.
For instance, if you’re photographing a white dog, opt for a darker background that he’ll stand out from. If you’re photographing a black dog, choose lighter background colors instead. Finding a good background to work with is all about having an eye for what shows off the dog the best!
Choose places in your home that the dog already likes to spend time in, and position him with your chosen background in mind. Use as much natural window light as possible, but don’t position yourself so the windows become the background unless you want to show the dog as a silhouette.
