Use Windows Video Display Troubleshooter

As you might expect, some troubleshooters are lurking in Windows to assist you with monitor and video problems.

In Windows 7 and Windows Vista, the troubleshooter can be found in the display adapter’s Properties dialog box. After opening the display adapter’s Properties dialog box, click the Troubleshoot tab. If you’re able to, click the Change Settings button; obey the directions on the screen. (Not every adapter lets you troubleshoot via the Properties dialog box.)

Windows XP has a video troubleshooter that’s a bit more interactive. Here’s how to get to it:

1. Right-click the desktop and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.

   
   



2. In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.

   
   



3. Click the Troubleshoot button.

   
   

   The Help and Support Center’s Video Display Troubleshooter appears.

   
   



4. Answer the questions and work through the troubleshooter to (hopefully) remedy your situation.

   
   



5. Close the open dialog boxes and windows when you’re done.

   
   

Another alternative to the Windows way of doing things is to see whether specific troubleshooting software is available from your display adapter’s manufacturer. This type of software might be accessible by right-clicking the desktop and looking for a special command on the pop-up menu.

You can also consider typing video help into the Windows Help system to see whether any helpful information is available, or whether a specific video troubleshooter can be found.
