How to Open the Windows Vista Command Prompt within a Specific Folder

Many advanced Windows commands are best issued from the command prompt (you know, the old DOS-like C:\> command line). Advanced Vista users have long been frustrated by the hassle of Vista's enormous pathnames at the command prompt. You can get around that problem by opening a command prompt within a specific folder in Windows Vista.

If you have a 64-bit system, the default command prompt opens in the C:\Windows\System64 directory. Alternatively, a 32-bit system opens in the C:\Windows\System32 directory.

1. Open the folder in which you want to open the command prompt.

   
   



2. Hold down the Shift key and right-click a blank space within the folder; then choose Open Command Window Here.

   
   

   Vista brings up the command prompt, based in the selected folder.

   
   



3. When you're finished, just click the X to close the command window.
