Exploring Some Graffiti Gee Whiz Secrets on Your Palm

Most people can get a good handle on Graffiti within a few hours, except for people under 15 years of age, who usually pick it up in about five minutes.

Even with some experience, certain Graffiti letters tend to stay finicky and are hard to enter accurately. Make your Graffiti characters as large, square, and vertical as possible.

Another trick is to figure out which letters can be entered by writing a number on the letter side of the Graffiti area and a letter on the number side of the Graffiti area. If you write the number 3 on the letter side of the Graffiti area, for example, the letter B turns up more reliably than it does if you actually draw the Graffiti letter B. Table 1 shows a list of letters that are often a problem; it also shows you how to get your Palm device to recognize them more reliably.

Table 1: Tricks of the Graffiti Trade

To Get This Character

Perform This Keystroke

B

Draw the number 3 on the letter side of the Graffiti area.

G

Draw the number 6 on the letter side of the Graffiti area.

K

This one is the trickiest Graffiti character. Just draw the "legs" on the side of the K, joined by a little loop. Leave out the vertical bar. To me, it looks a little like a fish swimming from right to left. I describe this subject in greater detail later in this chapter.

P

Begin at the bottom of the P and make the loop at the top pretty small.

Q

Draw an O with a long tail at the top.

R

Do this just like the P, but make the tail of the R extra long.

V

Draw the V backward (start from the top right).

Y

Just draw the lower loop of a cursive capital Y. It's just a loop, like the letter K, except that the fish is swimming down.

2

Draw the letter Z on the number side of the Graffiti writing area.

4

Draw the letter C on the number side of the Graffiti area.

5

Draw the letter S on the number side of the Graffiti area.

7

Draw a backward letter C on the number side of the Graffiti area.
