You can control BlackBerry PlayBook apps, including Video Chat and BBM, from home screen icons. Use the Bridge to connect to a Blackberry smartphone and send instant messages. Don't forget to protect your PlayBook by setting a password.

The BlackBerry PlayBook has icons on most of its screens. Enable the PlayBook Video Chat, Messenger, or the calendar with icons, or turn off airplane mode, the BlackBerry Bridge, or Wi-Fi with the icons shown here.

Using BlackBerry PlayBook Bridge


BlackBerry Bridge allows Internet tethering between the PlayBook and current BlackBerry smartphones (and some third-party smartphones) with Bluetooth communication. Plus, BlackBerry Bridge adds more apps: e-mail, calendar, contacts, Messenger, and more.



  1. Go to BlackBerry App World on your BlackBerry smartphone.



  2. Search for BlackBerry Bridge.



  3. Download BlackBerry Bridge to your phone.



  4. Go the home screen and click the Manage Connections icon.


    The icon looks like a small radio antenna.



  5. Click in the Bluetooth check box.



  6. Make sure your BlackBerry is set to be discoverable by other devices.



  7. Turn on Bluetooth connectivity on the BlackBerry PlayBook.



  8. Make Bluetooth discoverable.



  9. Go to the BlackBerry PlayBook and click the gear icon.



  10. Tap BlackBerry Bridge.



  11. Follow the instructions to pair your tablet to your phone.



  12. Acknowledge a message that asks you to permit the other device to open the Bridge.

Using BlackBerry PlayBook Messenger


Send instant messages with BlackBerry Messenger (BBM). The PlayBook offers BBM as part of the BlackBerry Bridge. Wirelessly connect your tablet to a BlackBerry smartphone to send and receive instant messages from the PlayBook.



  1. Add a contact to your BlackBerry device.



  2. Get that person’s permission to communicate.


    You must know one of the following to use BBM:



    • The person’s PIN



    • The e-mail address associated with the person’s device





  3. Send either a Request by PIN or Request by E-mail message.


    The following table helps you in BBM.























    To Do This . . .Do This
    Send a message using BlackBerry MessengerClick a name in the contacts list; then select and click Start
    Conversation. Type a message and press Enter.
    During a BBM session, choose Send a File or Send a Voice
    Note
    Record a message and send it as a note, and then wait for the
    other party to do the same. Internationally it’s
    cheaper.
    Exit a conversation (to conduct more than one BBM session, with
    different contacts, at the same time)
    Press the Escape key.
    End a conversationSelect and click End Conversation.

Setting a Password for Your BlackBerry PlayBook


Creating and using a password for your BlackBerry PlayBook makes the device more secure. To set a password, make the password easy to remember but tough to guess.



  1. Tap the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the home screen.



  2. Tap the Security tab on the left side of the screen.



  3. Tap Password.



  4. Move the slider for Enable Password to On.



  5. Enter a password.



  6. Enter it again.



  7. Choose a Lock After time.


    Choose one or two minutes.
