How to Reset the Broadband Modem

Occasionally, you may lose your connection to the Internet. The local network is okay: You can still access network printers. And accessing the hard drives is just fine, but the Internet is completely unreachable.

The first thing is to check if the lights on the modem are working properly. Is the modem getting a signal? If not, the problem is with your Internet service provider (ISP).

Next, try turning the modem off and then back on again. By cycling the modem’s power in this way, you can often wake it up and it then it reconnects its self to the Internet again. (Usually the power cycling solution fixes about 90 percent of broadband modem problems.)

When turning the modem off and on doesn’t work, try turning off the modem and the router. Wait a spell. Turn the modem back on. Wait. Turn the router back on. At that point, the entire system should be up and running and your PCs can see each other and access the Internet.

If, after all of that, the network still doesn’t work and Internet access looks like a faded memory, phoning your ISP for tech support is the best approach.
