Lion Server’s Profile Manager lets you configure profiles for devices and device groups, as well as users and user groups. You create profiles for devices the same way as profiles for users and groups, except you select Devices or Device Groups in the left column instead of Users or Groups.
If you don’t have any devices listed, you can create a placeholder until a user connects with the device. Follow these steps:
Click Devices in the left column.
Click the Add (+) button and select Add Placeholder from the pop-up menu.
Enter a name and serial number (or UDID, IMEI, or MEID) and click the Add button.
iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches have a Unique Device Identifier (UDID), which you can find in iTunes with the device plugged in to the computer. Select the device from the sidebar and then click the serial number. It will change to a UDID. iPads with 3G also have a Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) engraved on the back. Verizon iPhones also have Mobile Equipment Identifiers (MEID).
The device now appears in the middle column. If you select it and click the About box, you find more information about it.
For the serial number for Macs running Lion, choose Apple menu→About This Mac, and click the More Info button. For iOS devices, go to Settings, click the General item, and then click About.
This is a very convenient feature when dealing with a device that has more than one person working on it, as in a school computer lab or workstations in an art department. In this case, it is more convenient to manage configuration profiles for the device instead of users.
The same would be true for a user who has more than one Mac but needs different settings on each.
