How to Add Flair to Salads with Toppings

You can add flair to a basic mixed green or fresh vegetable salad in many ways. A steady diet of salads sounds health-conscious, but can become boring. Make your salads tasty (and attractive) with any number of salad-toppers.

  • Chunks of fresh fruit, such as orange, pear, or apple

  • Slivered almonds or walnut pieces

  • Sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds

  • Diced tofu

  • Chopped dried fruits, such as dried apples, pears, raisins, cherries, or figs

  • Canned beans such as cannelloni beans (white kidney beans), garbanzo beans, and kidney beans, rinsed to remove the unsightly outer hulls

  • Shredded red cabbage

  • Grated carrot

Another trick to give a salad a special look is to run the tines of a fork lengthwise down the sides of a cucumber, scraping it, before slicing it into the salad. Also, use the tip of a spoon to scrape away the seeds in tomato wedges before adding them to a salad. Doing so keeps globs of seeds from separating out and helps give the salad a neater appearance.
