How to Stop Sharing a Folder in Windows XP

Windows allows you to share folders between users on your local area network, but there may come a time when you want to or need to stop sharing a folder. Setting up a folder to share is a simple process and unsharing it is even easier.

You can stop sharing a folder in Windows XP by obeying these simple steps:

1. Find the folder you want to stop sharing.

   
   



2. Right-click the folder’s icon.

   
   

   You have to see the folder, not be “in” the folder.

   
   



3. Choose Sharing and Security from the shortcut menu.

   
   

   The folder’s Properties dialog box appears with the Sharing tab upfront.

   
   



4. Remove the checkmark in front of Share the Folder On the Network.

   
   



5. Click OK to stop sharing the folder.

   
   

If someone else on the network is using the shared folder as you unshare it, you see a warning dialog box. Always try to ensure that the other user is done sharing before you cut them off; if that person is changing a file, then by halting sharing, you could damage the file. Then again, if the other user is doing so without permission, the file has already been damaged.
