How to Manage Your FlipShare Software Library

Video files you copy from your Flip camera to your computer are stored in the FlipShare Library folder on your computer’s hard drive. Video files are generally large in size, and they take up a lot of space. To find out how much space videos gobble up on your computer’s hard drive, refer to the following general estimates:

  • A 30-minute standard-definition (SD) video uses approximately 1GB of space, and a high-definition (HD) video of the same length uses approximately 2GB of hard drive space.

  • A 120-minute SD video uses approximately 4GB of space, and an HD video of the same length uses approximately 8GB of hard drive space.

At some point, your hard drive might become so full it runs out of space for storing any more video files. To see how much hard drive space your FlipShare Library folder uses (and how much space remains on your hard drive for storing more files), open the FlipShare Preferences pane and click the Library tab.

If your hard drive is running low on remaining storage space, you can delete video files from your FlipShare folder by running FlipShare and then deleting the files you no longer want.

Deleting videos files from your Flip and computer

Videos saved on your Flip camera stay there until you delete them using the Delete button on your Flip, or you delete them from your camera using the FlipShare program. After they're deleted from both your camcorder and your computer, your videos are permanently erased and cannot be retrieved. If you delete a video from your FlipShare Library that you didn’t mean to delete and if the video is still stored on your Flip camera, you can copy the video back to your computer (and vice versa).

To delete video files from your computer, go to your FlipShare Library folder on your computer and select the files that you want to delete. Right-click (Ctrl-click on a Mac) and choose either Delete (Windows) or Move to Trash.

Moving your FlipShare Library

Another option is to move your FlipShare Library to an external hard drive, with lots of available space on it for storing your existing FlipShare Library and plenty of room left over to store new video files.

Before you move your FlipShare Library to an external hard drive, monitor the Progress box in the lower-left corner to make sure FlipShare has completed any tasks that were in progress, such as copying video files from your Flip camera to your computer’s hard drive or updating your Flip camera’s software.

After you look at the Progress box and make sure that FlipShare isn’t performing any tasks, follow these steps:

  1. Choose Edit, Preferences (Windows), or FlipShare, Preferences (Mac), to open the FlipShare Preferences window.

  2. Click the Library tab to display the Library Preferences pane.

  3. Click the Change Library button to open the Browse for Folder button.

  4. Locate the external drive where you want to relocate your FlipShare Library and then click OK (Windows) or Choose to select the drive.

A progress dialog box appears and displays the status while FlipShare moves the contents of the FlipShare Library folder on your computer’s hard drive to the external hard drive you selected.

Note: While FlipShare is moving the files, you won’t be able to do any other tasks until FlipShare finishes moving the Library folder.

A message appears when FlipShare has finished relocating the FlipShare Library.

  5. Click the Close FlipShare button to close the dialog box and restart FlipShare.
