Freely Resize Shapes in an InDesign CS5 Publication

In an InDesign Creative Suite 5 publication, shapes (circles, rectangles, lines, and so on), can be any size, large or small. Shapes can be transformed (resized) in an InDesign document by using the Free Transform tool. Sometimes you need to resize a shape after creating it, in order to accommodate other elements on the page.

Shapes can also be resized using Transform panel. Although this method might allow you to be more precise when resizing a shape, it is also more complicated. If you can handle a bit of impreciseness, you can quickly resize a shape visually using the Free Transform tool.

1. Make sure that only the object you want to resize is selected.

   
   

   Group multiple objects if you want to resize several objects simultaneously. To group objects, select one object and Shift-click to add it to the selection, and then press Ctrl+G (Windows) or Cmd+G (Mac).

   
   



2. Select the Free Transform tool.

   
   

   A bounding box appears around the selected objects.

   
   



3. Click any corner point and drag to resize the object(s).

   
   

   Hold down the Shift key while dragging to keep the objects constrained proportionally as you resize.
