System restore points are set automatically in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Windows Vista resets usually just after midnight (assuming that you’re up that late or leave the PC on all the time). They’re also set before you install new software, as part of the Setup program. But, for other times you must set a manual restore point.
For example, just before installing new hardware or perhaps before you take a stab at configuring wireless networking for the first time, manually set a restore point.
Restore points are set automatically in Windows 7. In fact, because the option to set a restore point is hidden, you can assume that Microsoft doesn’t want you to manually set them. Even so, knowing where the option is hidden can be helpful. To manually set a restore point in Windows 7 and Windows Vista, follow these steps:
Press Win+Break to summon the System window.
From the list of tasks on the left side of the window, choose System Protection.
In Windows Vista, click the Continue button or type the administrator’s password to continue.
The System Properties dialog box appears, with its System Protection tab forward.
Click the Create button, found near the bottom of the dialog box.
Type a descriptive name for the restore point.
Describe the restore point in terms of the item you’re installing or changing on the computer — for example, Massive hard drive cleaning binge or Adjusting new monitor.
Click the Create button.
Eventually, a System Protection dialog box appears, confirming that the restore point was created.
Click the Close button, and close any dialog boxes or windows you’ve opened.
You can review the schedule for automatic restore points in Windows 7 and Windows Vista by visiting the Task Scheduler.
