Starting with Windows XP, System Restore gained full graphical popularity as a way to recover from common goofs, such as wrong settings or improperly installed software or hardware. But, System Restore counts on having a recent Restore Point. In Windows 7, that’s automatic. But, for Windows XP you must set a manual restore point every time. Following these steps sets a restore point in Windows XP:
For example, just before installing new hardware or perhaps taking a chance at configuring wireless networking for the first time; manually set a restore point.
From the Start button menu, choose All Programs→Accessories→System Tools→System Restore.
You will see the main System Restore window.
Choose the option Create a Restore Point.
Click the Next button.
Type a descriptive name.
Use your writing skills to create a name that reflects the reason for creating the restore point. Examples may include: About to do something utterly foolish, My cousin Ralph is visiting, or Just in case my nephew tries to trick out my computer again.
Click the Create button.
The restore point is created and described in scary, bold, red text.
Click the Close button.
After creating the restore point, proceed with whatever modifications you plan on making to your computer. You now have peace of mind, knowing that a restore point looms in the past, in case you need it.
